From Experiments to Excellence: Monika Srivastava’s PgCTL Success Story

Monika’s global teaching journey

This blog is inspired by an insightful video interview with Monika Srivastava, where she shares her incredible journey as a dedicated early education teacher and a PgCTL graduate.

"Teaching young minds is not just about knowledge; it's about igniting curiosity, building connections, and shaping the future with every lesson."

Monika Srivastava, an accomplished teacher and dedicated learner, has always believed in the transformative power of education. From aspiring to serve in the Indian Air Force to becoming a teacher who shapes the foundational years of young learners, her journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and continuous growth.

A Path Paved with Uncertainties

Monika’s journey into teaching wasn’t planned. After narrowly missing her chance to join the Indian Air Force, she found herself exploring new paths. At her mother’s suggestion, she took up a teaching position at a public school, initially intending it to be temporary. However, her one-year stint as a biology teacher for Grades 9 and 10 turned into six years of discovery and passion.

“When I interacted with young minds, I realized how impactful teaching could be. It wasn’t just about delivering lessons; it was about inspiring and guiding,” Monika shared.

Her love for teaching grew, and after completing her Master’s in Microbiology, she continued her journey, transitioning from teaching higher classes to early education.

Discovering the Joy of Early Education

Monika’s entry into early education came years later, inspired by her own daughters. “Playing with my daughters and seeing their curiosity made me realize how crucial the formative years are. That’s when I decided to dive into early education,” she explained.

Starting as a helper teacher, Monika quickly realized the challenges and rewards of teaching children aged three to six. “Their minds are like blank slates. Teaching them isn’t just about imparting knowledge; it’s about creating experiences that stick with them for life,” she added.

With her background in science, Monika began integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities into her lessons. “Whether it was teaching a rhyme or narrating a story, STEAM made learning engaging and meaningful for my students,” she said.

The PgCTL Connection: A Game Changer

PgCTL Certification

Monika’s search for professional growth led her to the Professional Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning (PgCTL) by Suraasa. She describes it as a turning point in her career. “PgCTL wasn’t just a program; it was a complete transformation for me as a teacher,” Monika shared.

The program equipped her with practical tools to navigate the challenges of early education. “One of the biggest takeaways for me was mastering questioning techniques. PgCTL taught me how to use Bloom’s Taxonomy and hinge questioning to engage my students better and make learning more interactive,” she explained.

She also appreciated how the program emphasized foundational skills. “The focus on Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTs) as a base for Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTs) was eye-opening. It helped me structure my lessons in a way that builds critical thinking step by step,” Monika added.

The confidence Monika gained from PgCTL didn’t just transform her teaching but also prepared her to take on larger roles, like action research and mentoring other teachers.

A Researcher Shaping the Future of Education

Monika’s dedication and expertise were recognized when she was selected for the prestigious CBSE Action Research Program. Among thousands of applicants, she was one of 19 teachers awarded funding for her research on STEAM integration in early education.

“My research focuses on how STEAM activities can enhance learning in foundational years. Integrating hands-on experiences into lessons fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity,” Monika explained.

Her findings will be shared with CBSE, potentially impacting teaching practices across India.

Lessons from the Classroom

Monika’s journey has taught her invaluable lessons about patience, adaptability, and self-reflection. “Self-assessment is vital for every teacher. It helps us understand where we stand, what our students need, and how we can improve,” she emphasized.

Her approach to early education—building trust, creating safe spaces, and tailoring lessons to her students’ needs—has made her a beloved teacher and a role model for her peers.

Monika’s Advice to Fellow Teachers

Monika’s message to teachers is simple yet profound: “Keep learning. Enroll in courses, attend workshops, and upskill yourself continuously. Teaching isn’t just a profession; it’s a lifelong journey of growth and impact.”
